Properly configured, what happens is your local devices use the IP of the server to find local resources, and when the server has no idea what you are looking for when you do a query to an external source, it turns to its forwarders, retrieves the correct IP, and passes that IP back to the device so it can find the external resource. 'Forwarders' are external servers used to look up external resource IP addresses. You do not add a 'forward lookup' for LAN computers to find external resources you add 'forwarders' in the server's DNS console.

Either one SHOULD work.ДЇor external lookups to work, you need to use DNS 'forwarders', either your own choice or the root hint servers. I have had too many times where 127.0.0.1 actually caused problems, so I use the LAN IP of the server as the only DNS entry and have not had an issue. One way is to use 127.0.0.1 as the only DNS server IP in the server's NIC properties, and the second is to use the LAN IP of the DNS server I don't know what other articles you found, but there always has been two ways (without registry modifications to compensate) to set up DNS for a local domain with one DC/DNS server.

It is odd how much I looked and yet there are so many conflicting ways of setting up DNS for a local domain with one DNS. I guess I really did just have a DNS issue. I am now able to successfully join the domain and access the file share from the server on 2 laptops after I configured the DNS correctly. Setting the DNS to 127.0.0.1 and nothing else, as well as setting my laptops DNS to the IP of the DC also is what my issue was. I do not know what is going wrong here and have looked everywhere I can think of but I am a novice at domains and DNS.

When I enter my domain name it asks me for my credentials which I enter correctly and then it just sits there for a while and then tells me the specific domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.ДЇorgive me if I left any pertinent information out.

I created a new user with a password in the Active Directory Users and Computers and attempted to join the domain on the laptop. I set my alternate DNS server to 127.0.0.1. I also set the preferred DNS to my ISP DNS of 69.103.27.11 (let's just say). This also installed DNS and I promoted the server to a domain controller.

I installed AD DS via the Dashboard after following some tutorials. I am not going for security etc here just yet. I have also connected my client (Windows 10 laptop) via ethernet to that same router.

I have installed Windows Server 2019 onto a ProLiant Gen10 Plus and have connected via ethernet to my Cox business router/modem (Technicolor).
